Set beside the river in one of Cambridge’s most characterful neighbourhoods, The Waterman is perfectly placed to explore the city at a slower pace. Spend the morning wandering along the River Cam, watching the punts drift by beneath the bridges, before crossing into the historic centre where cobbled lanes, independent bookshops, and grand college buildings sit around every corner. Whether it’s your first visit or a familiar return, Cambridge has a way of drawing you in gently.

For those looking to experience the city like a local, there’s plenty beyond the postcard views. Browse the market square for artisan food and vintage finds, take a riverside walk towards Midsummer Common, or settle into one of the city’s tucked-away wine bars and pubs for a long afternoon. Cambridge is equally suited to slow weekends and lively evenings, with theatre, live music, late-night bars and independent restaurants all within easy reach of the Waterman.

Culture lovers can spend hours exploring world-famous colleges, galleries and museums, while food and drink enthusiasts will find everything from relaxed brunch spots to tasting menus and traditional pubs. In the warmer months, the city comes alive outdoors — picnics on the grass, spritzes by the river and punting at golden hour become part of the rhythm of the day.

Then, once the city has been explored, there’s something especially comforting about returning to the pub. A proper pint downstairs, good food, relaxed rooms upstairs and the easy atmosphere of a neighbourhood local — the simple pleasures done well.

Yes, we love furry four-legged friends just as much as humans. Just add your pet to your booking (up to two pups can stay with you for £25 per stay, and we’ll make sure they get a VIP welcome with a doggy hamper full of tasty tail-wagging treats, a doggy bed or blanket and bowl.

We don’t unfortunately, but there are plenty of parking spaces close by – like Chesterton Crescent Hall, just five minutes away.

Or, you can try these other options:

• Park Street Car Park — probably the best central option for guests staying overnight or exploring Cambridge on foot. Around a 10–15 minute walk to the pub and close to the river and colleges. Open 24 hours.
• Grafton West Car Park — one of the closest larger car parks to the Waterman and ideal for daytime visits. Easy walk across Midsummer Common.
• Castle Hill Car Park — a good option if you’re arriving from outside Cambridge and want slightly easier access in and out of the city.
• Grand Arcade car park — best if you’re planning a full day in the city centre before heading back to the pub. Open 24 hours and very central.

Our closest train station is Cambridge or Cambridge North, just a 5-10 minute drive from the pub.
